Choosing the right label material and adhesive is critical when your product operates in harsh conditions. Paper labels fail in seconds outdoors, and the wrong ribbon type will leave a smudged mark. This guide shows what synthetic materials and adhesives to pick for water, UV, chemicals and high-temperature exposure.

TL;DR

For outdoor/water: white PP or PET + resin ribbon. For chemicals/solvents: PET or polyimide + resin. For high temperatures (>150°C): polyimide (Kapton). For cold storage/freezer: freezer-grade adhesive + PP face.

When Are Resistant Labels Required?

  • Outdoor equipment, machinery, agricultural implements – rain, sun, temperature cycling
  • Chemical barrels, detergents, lubricants – contact with aggressive media
  • Cosmetic and pharmaceutical products – alcohol wipes, frequent cleaning
  • Refrigerated and frozen foods – condensation, deep-freeze
  • Car parts, electronics – oils, heat, vibration
  • Laboratory samples – solvents, autoclave sterilization

Resistant Label Materials

PP (Polypropylene)

White / Clear PP

Applications: cosmetics, chemical household products, plastic containers, outdoor light-duty labels.

  • Resistant to water, mild detergents, short-term UV (up to 1–2 years outdoors)
  • Flexible – conforms to curved surfaces, bottles, pipes
  • Temperature range −20°C to +80°C
  • Moderate price (1.5–2× paper)
  • Works with wax-resin and resin ribbons
PET (Polyester)

Silver / White / Clear PET

Applications: industrial nameplates, electronic equipment, machinery, outdoor labels (extended life), asset tags.

  • Excellent chemical resistance (acids, alkalis, most solvents)
  • Very high UV resistance (up to 5+ years outdoors)
  • Temperature range −40°C to +150°C
  • High price (2–3× paper)
  • Requires resin ribbon for durable print
Polyimide (Kapton)

Polyimide Labels

Applications: PCB boards, wave soldering, aerospace, ovens, military electronics.

  • Extreme temperature resistance – up to +300°C (short exposure +400°C)
  • Chemical and solvent resistance
  • Withstands reflow and wave soldering processes
  • Highest price (5–8× paper)
  • Mandatory resin ribbon
Vinyl

Vinyl Labels (PVC)

Applications: outdoor markings, vehicles, pipelines, safety signage.

  • Very good UV and weather resistance (5–7 years)
  • Flexible – good for curved surfaces
  • Good conformability for long-term outdoor marking
  • Medium-high price
  • Works with resin ribbons

Resistance Comparison Table

PET (silver/white) Yes 5+ yrs Yes Yes +150°C Yes
Polyimide Yes 10+ yrs Yes Yes +300°C Yes
Vinyl (PVC) Yes 5–7 yrs Partial Partial +70°C Yes

Adhesives for Harsh Environments

The adhesive is just as important as the face material. Standard permanent glue performs poorly in extreme conditions.

  • Standard permanent – general indoor use, +10°C application temperature minimum
  • Cold-apply adhesive – applies down to −10°C (shipping boxes in cold stores)
  • Deep-freeze adhesive – maintains adhesion at −40°C
  • High-tack – strong initial tack for low-energy surfaces (rough plastic, PE)
  • Acrylic (water-based) – UV resistant, does not yellow
  • Acrylic (solvent-based) – highest chemical and temperature resistance

Ribbon for Resistant Labels

Even the best synthetic label face will smudge with the wrong ribbon. For resistant labels, always use resin ribbons (and sometimes specialty resin formulations like Resin-Oil or Resin-Chemical). Read more in our Wax vs Resin Ribbon guide.

Certifications and Standards

Common certifications for resistant labels in regulated industries:

  • BS 5609 – marine shipping labels (chemical drums, sea water immersion)
  • UL 969 – marking and labeling systems (American standard)
  • IEC 61340 – ESD-safe labels for electronics
  • GHS/CLP – chemical hazard labeling requirements
